Americans spend more than six billion dollars on toilet paper each year, more than any other country in the world. On average, people in the United States use fifty-seven squares each day. That averages out to about fifty pounds of toilet paper used by each person each year.

Toilet paper is often whitened and bleached with chlorine. There are ways to achieve white toilet paper using totally chlorine-free (TCF) or processed chlorine-free (PCF) techniques, and many manufacturers use them. Other chemicals used in producing toilet paper can be inks, dyes, and perfumes. Some brands add lotion for added comfort while other options include pre-moistened wipes that entirely eliminate the dry toilet paper option. All of these additives have to be made of something, and usually they are chemicals that you might not want to expose the very sensitive parts of your body to on a daily and intimate basis.

When choosing a toilet paper, look for one that states that it is free of inks, dyes, and perfumes. Toilet paper made with TCF or PCF techniques are good choices, too. If you experience sensitivity, swelling, or redness, consider using another brand of toilet paper to see if that is the cause.
